Creativity and Innovation
in interior spaces
and furniture design
for a new era

Industrialization based on mass production and mass consumption has resulted in the waste of resources and pollution by industrial wastes, thus threatening the survival of humanity. The rapid industrialization of East Asia, whose population is approximately three times larger than that of Western Europe, has been making matters worse with accelerating mass consumption of natural resources even as we make transition to an information society. We have yet to come up with an alternative or new way of life for a new era, though. We have to find a new information-driven industrialization model geared toward sustainability that minimizes resource depletion and environmental destruction. Our exploration of new paths of life, however, must be preceded by reflection on our cultural identity and efforts to preserve cultural continuity and context.

“Changshin: Designing a New Civilization” starts from the recognition of such cultural and ecological problems. Changshin will support young designers who, having reflected on our thoroughly westernized life, arrive armed with a creative and enterprising spirit and ready to lead the cultural “pivot to Asia.” The four future challenges facing humanity presented by Changshin will guide them in an appropriate orientation toward the future. Creating new residential environment designs conducive to leading a new life is the greatest mission of designers at the dawn of this new era.

  • 1. Restoration of pleasure and delight hitherto lost from life
  • 2. Housing that embodies family happiness, health, and success
